Lot Description
1849-O Liberty Seated Quarter. Briggs 1-A, the only known dies. VF-30 (PCGS). The rarity of this issue is such that even Fine and VF survivors merit a Rarity-5+ rating per Larry Briggs in the 1991 book The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters. The original mintage is unknown, in fact, although some numismatic scholars (Briggs among them) believe that approximately 16,000 examples of the 412,000-piece mintage reported for the 1850-O were dated 1849-O. A handsome and original mid grade survivor of this key date issue, the present example offers dominant dove gray patina with tinges of blue-gray iridescence confined to the reverse field. Problem free for the grade, with suitably bold detail and no sizeable or otherwise outwardly distracting abrasions. A find for the dedicated Liberty Seated and/or New Orleans Mint specialist.
