Tompkins Die Stage 2/2, Rea et al. Die State P. A handsome and significant example of this conditionally challenged die pairing of the 1805-dated quarter issue. The obverse is dressed in warm, even steel gray, while the lighter reverse exhibits blushes of steel-olive to a base of pewter gray. Both sides show much softly frosted luster as the coin rotates under a light, the obverse also iridescent undertones of rose and blue. A few light marks are generally well concealed within the top of Liberty's portrait, the in hand appearance smooth, the detail bold to sharp in most areas. Trailing B-3, the Browning-2 is the second most common die pairing of the 1805-dated quarter issue. Writing in his 2008 reference on this series, however, Steve M. Tompkins cautions, "Although this marriage is available in most grades, truly nice EF and above grades will present a challenge to the die marriage collector."
