- M. Diatom Collection. The Minute Hall Collection. Bass-Dannreuther-1, R.4+ has a small "8" in the date, and a noticeable die-crack over the tops of UNIT on the reverse. A strong cud over "T" in UNITED is diagnostic for the middle die-state, and appears to be the most common stage of the reverse die. Type examples tend to exhibit adjustment marks, but such is not the case here as neither side shows any of the striations usually seen. A faint touch of lime-green iridescence visits the surface, in no way impeding the subtle luster seen despite the alleged faint touch of wear, as called out by the PCGS AU-58 grade. The early mint was capable of producing attractive strikes for coins made of the softer gold planchets, epitomized here by stoutly defined feathers and the eagle's distinct pupil (scotia).
