Description du lot: Breen Die State V, the three vertical cracks in the left obverse field are strong and clear. An important offering for specialists, and a lovely Draped Bust cent irrespective of date or die pairing. The surfaces are smooth and hard, free of roughness and granularity, with only minor marks scattered about. Some of the marks undoubtedly pre-date striking, most are singularly inconspicuous during in-hand viewing, and the most significant for provenance purposes are dull nicks on Liberty's chin and in the obverse field above the end of the bust. Traces of faded mint orange color remain at the upper reverse border, engaging the letters TES OF, both sides otherwise warmly and originally toned in blended golden-brown and olive-copper. A strong frosty texture enhances the appeal of this premium piece.<p>This is the CC#2 coin for the Sheldon-159 dies in both the Bland and Noyes censuses, in which it is graded EAC EF45 and EAC EF45, net EF-40, respectively. The CC#1 coin in both listings is the Mint State Book-Clapp-Sheldon specimen that is part of the American Numismatic Society Collection. The Widmer Family coin, therefore, is the finest example of this variety available for private ownership. It is a beautiful piece that is eagerly awaiting inclusion in another world class early copper cabinet.
