- 1802 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. BB-242, B-5. Rarity-5. Wide Date. EF-40 (PCGS). CAC. Secure Holder. Writing in the 1993 book Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia, Volume One, Q. David Bowers has this to say about the 1802 BB-242 die marriage:

With an estimated population of only 75 to 140 specimens, 1802 BB-242 is at once the rarest (by far) non-overdated 1802, and the second rarest (after 1802/1 BB-235) variety of the year. In 1881, it was the only variety of 1802 that Haseltine designated as rare.

Here represented by a lovely EF, this coin is sure to be of keen interest to early Dollar variety specialists. Handsome silver-lilac patina to both sides, warmer antique-copper peripheral highlights also extend into the center on the reverse. Bold-to-sharp in detail, with no worrisome detractions of any kind.
