Lot Description
1867 Silver Three-Cent Piece. MS-63 (PCGS). This flashy and delicately toned piece sports a mix of gold and burgundy patina near the borders. The devices are frosty and sharply struck, emphasized by satiny and reflective luster in the fields. One of the lowest mintage issues in the circulation strike silver three-cent series, the 1867 was produced to the extent of just 4,000 pieces. The withdrawal of silver from circulation in the East and Midwest early in the Civil War was the beginning of the end for this denomination. After 1862 yearly mintages never again reached the six-figure mark, and the final year 1873 was produced solely in Proof format. This is a rare coin from both absolute and condition standpoints, and its offering in this sale represents a fleeting bidding opportunity for the advanced numismatist. PCGS# 3687. NGC ID: 22ZH.
