Lot Description
1857-C Gold Dollar. Winter Variety 1 (10-M), the only known dies. AU-53 (NGC). Muted honey-gold surfaces are lightly circulated, yet free of individually conspicuous abrasions. The overall definition is suitably bold by C-mint standards, but there is a shallow as-struck flan flaw over and before the front of Liberty's headdress that affects the detail in that area. The digits 18 in the date are also a bit soft, as typically seen for the issue. In grades above the EF level, the 1857-C is the rarest Charlotte Mint Gold Dollar after only the noncollectible 1849-C Open Wreath and the 1855-C Type II.
