- The Minute Hall Collection. Mintage: 138,500. Until about forty years ago, 1916-S was considered very rare in any uncircualated grade before high-grade examples emerged from multiple hoards, causing a sudden elevation of the mint-state population to mollify the market. Still, the lower mintage ensures demand for better pieces, of which the present example certainly qualifies as a "better piece". Despite the mundane MS-61 grade, either side possesses memorably attractive luster and gorgeous medium-gold hue, interrupted by small surface grazes. The luster appears slightly granular as is typical of contemporary San Francisco emissions. One could easily see the quality gaining a point in today's grading environment.
