Lot Description
1846 Liberty Seated Quarter. Briggs-Unlisted. AU-58 (PCGS). This 1846 quarter is boldly toned in steel-olive and silver-gray with iridescent undertones. It is a sharply struck, satin to semi-prooflike example that is just a whisper away from full Mint State preservation. Despite a mintage of 510,000 pieces and a relatively generous population of heavily circulated survivors, the 1846 is scarce in Choice AU and Mint State grades. This will be a find for collectors specializing in the challenging and underrated Liberty Seated quarter series. Provenance: From the A.J. Vanderbilt Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the George F. Scanlon Collection, October 1973, lot 976. Lot tag included. PCGS Population: 13; 19 finer (MS-65 finest). PCGS# 5409. NGC ID: 23SW.
