Lot Description
Ex Hesselgesser Collection. A "Notable Specimen" of this scarce die marriage, which Dave Bowers notes 300-550 survive in all grades, and lists a census of 64,64,63,61,58,55. The majority of these are obviously heavily worn, with most in the Good to XF range. Bowers estimates 10-20 survive in all AU grades, with just a handful in Mint State. This highly attractive example has bold definition throughout which is accented by a somewhat reflective surface which comes out when viewed in certain angles in the light. Totally original shades of deep pewter, slate, and russet-tan have blended accents of olive, teal, and pale blue that come out when rotating the surfaces in a light. A few ancient ticks will forever identify this fully CHOICE early dollar as the Hesselgesser coin. Surprisingly no prior provenance is recorded for this beauty. PCGS 14, NGC 22, CAC 3. This is the only CAC coin to have sold, realizing $17,250 in September 2011. The market for early dollars has seen some weakness more recently, making this a great time to add very high end examples like this really CHOICE AU to your type or date set. It should bring a strong bid. Cert. Number 16294696 PCGS # 6900
