- While 343,500 pieces were struck, many 1914-D eagles traveled east and then to Europe where they served as financial security through two world wars and the Great Depression. Others were melted in the federal gold recall of the 1930s. Frosty, fine-textured surfaces cover both sides of this lustrous rose-gold survivor, with sharp definition on the headdress and the eagle's wing. Only a scattering of tiny marks prevent an even higher grade.
