Losbeschreibung: Breen Die State II. Really a lovely piece, well struck with attractively original color. Border denticulation is missing around much of the obverse, also at upper reverse, but the centering is actually quite good, and all major design elements are bold to sharp in the absence of all but trivial wear. Warmly toned in olive-copper, a few speckles of steel-brown are faintly discernible on the obverse, but do not distract. There are also no distracting marks, and one will need a loupe to discern a useful provenance marker in the form of a faint obverse pin scratch that slants down to the left from the back of Liberty's head, above the ribbon ends. Hard and tight with a frosty texture and some nice gloss.<p>A plentiful variety in an absolute sense, there are also quite a few high grade examples of Sheldon-184 in numismatic hands. The 2000 Bland census includes coins with EAC grades of AU50 to MS-63, although the Widmer Family specimen offered here is not included therein. Our EAC grade of AU50 suggests that it should be, and with coveted CAC approval at the PCGS AU-58 grade level, this is a significant coin that will be desirable to both early copper variety enthusiasts and high grade type collectors.
