Lot Description
1814 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-107. Rarity-2. MS-62 (PCGS). Attractive satiny surfaces toned to deep gray and golden-tan on the obverse, and lighter coin-gray on the reverse. Strong cartwheel luster swirls over each side and there are no abrasions or spots to detract from the excellent eye appeal. Bold clash marks on each side invite careful study where both the obverse and reverse die impressed their respective designs into the opposing die as there was no planchet between the dies during the striking process. Clashing is particularly common in this era on the half dollars, and it is likely that the Mint's planchet feeding mechanism frequently became fouled allowing the dies to strike each other as exhibited here. Provenance: From the Iron Eagle Collection. PCGS# 39484. NGC ID: 24F3. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
