- 1839 Modified Matron Head Cent. N-3. Rarity-1. Head of 1838. MS-66 BN (PCGS).
A dynamic and original example of this transitional issue with deep golden tan surfaces and a generous amount of mint red in the protected areas. The strike at the center is bold though we note some trifling weakness at a few of the obverse stars. Choice for the grade, and a coin that holds up well to magnified scrutiny. Among the finest surviving examples with 2 graded higher by PCGS.
Provenance: From the Collection of Thaddeus A. Tatum III. Earlier ex our (Stacks) sale of August 2010, lot 233.
PCGS Population: 6; 2 finer.
