Lot Description
Breen Die State III. Struck from medallic alignment of the dies. A smartly impressed and otherwise sharply defined example with the only mentionable lack of detail minor and confined to the right reverse border, where the denticulation is beyond the flan. The surfaces are hard and frosty, the obverse dressed in rich steel-brown patina while the reverse is lighter in medium golden-brown with blushes of slighter deeper color at the letters D in UNITED and E in ONE. A faint vertical nick on Liberty's neck and trio of short contact marks above the uppermost ribbon end are the only blemishes of note and are difficult to discern during in-hand viewing and more significant for provenance purposes than any other reason. A trace of friction to the high points explains Noyes' EAC grade of AU55, net AU50 and ranking as tied for CC#8, but this coin presents as Mint State and is a stunning example of both the type and Sheldon-276 dies.
