Lot Description
Richly lustrous silver surfaces are accented with splashes of orange-copper, deep rose and cobalt blue iridescence - just the sort of coin that would serve as a highlight in the collection of an advanced toning enthusiast. The technical quality is just as superb as the eye appeal, with both sides fully struck from the rims to the centers and the surfaces essentially pristine. Even among other Ultra Gems for the 1939-D dime, few can compare to the vividly toned example offered here.
David W. Lange described the 1939-D as the "quintessential type coin" in the 2005 edition of his Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes and further noted that it is "perhaps the most consistently attractive Mercury Dime [sic] in the entire series." The same stellar-quality example was chosen for inclusion in the fabulous Knoxville Collection and as the cover coin to Lange's book. The specimen offered here is in the same league for both quality and eye appeal and is eagerly awaiting inclusion in another world class cabinet.
