Lot Description

Manley Die State 2.0. Rich copper-brown patina with a tinge of olive enhancing both sides. The strike is typical for the variety, most features remaining bold for the grade, but the back of Liberty's portrait and the left-central reverse are quite soft. Small marks pepper both sides, none of which are singularly distracting or otherwise out of context for an early copper that saw this extensive circulation.<p>Delivered on June 29, 1805, along with the even rarer C-2 and plentiful C-4 varieties, Cohen-3 is the second scarcest attribution of the 1805 half cent issue. This pleasing PCGS-certified Fine is about as nice as they come within the 150 survivors estimated by Bill Eckberg (2019), who also observes that this variety is very rare in higher grades.
