Lot Description
1828 Capped Bust Quarter. B-4. Rarity-3. MS-63 (PCGS). Vivid reddish-apricot and olive peripheral highlights blend nicely with dominant pewter gray patina on both sides of this richly original example. Virtually full in strike, sharply defined surfaces are smooth and lustrous with a soft satin texture. The 1828 is the final quarter issue prior to 1831, and the last of the Large Diameter style of the basic Capped Bust design type. Four varieties are known with B-4, offered here, representing the only use of both the obverse and reverse dies. Star 1 is closer to the denticles than to the end of Liberty's bust, and the letter F in OF in the reverse legend is low. The Choice Uncirculated example offered here is conditionally scarce for both the type and variety and represents a significant find for the advanced collector. PCGS# 5342. NGC ID: 23RV. PCGS Population (all known die marriages of the issue): 13; 19 finer (MS-66+ finest).
