1820/19 Matron Head Cent. N-3. Rarity-2. MS-64 BN (PCGS). There are three die marriages of the 1820/19 Matron Head cent, and the highest graded survivors are all attributable to the Newcomb-3 variety, as here. Even N-3 is elusive in the finest Mint State grades, however, and the present example is at or near Condition Census standing. Both sides exhibit a lovely glossy texture with traces of original bright orange color still very much in evidence, especially on the reverse. Warm medium brown patina to most areas, the strike is bold to sharp throughout, and grade defining carbon is absolutely minimal. A highlight of the Fowler Collection, and a coin that represents an important find for another specialized collector.
