Lot Description
Ex San Diego Collection, as noted on the insert. We love the look of this 1817 half dollar! WOW. Among the FINEST KNOWN of the O-110a die state, this borderline GEM has a bold luster and is ultra eye appealing for the assigned grade. This is a knockout near-GEM 1817 with the distinct and coveted "Dale Friend" look. Highly lustrous surfaces are awash in a beautiful array of teal and clover at the rims, deepening to a lilac-tinged slate in the centers. Beautifully preserved, the surfaces are devoid of all but the most insignificant ticks or marks, visible only to the naked eye. The devices are nicely rendered by a nearly exacting blow from the dies, just some softness of strike, is noted for the sake of accuracy. The eye appeal is, as you would expect from an ex Dale Friend Collection coin, exceptional. Ex Heritage, October 2010, lot 3662; Dale Friend Collection; Heritage, June 2014, lot 4513; Heritage, November 2016, lot 5273; our consignor. PCGS 26, NGC 14, CAC 8. There are seven in MS64+ and just eight are finer. The last MS64+ to sell was the Bob Simpson "Comet Head" and brought $28,800 in April 2021; before that one, an example brought $13,200 in the 2019 ANA auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $28,000. VERY RARE finer, this is an ideal example for any SUPERB cabinet of Capped Bust half dollars. We can anticipate very strong bidding on this one when it crosses the block. Cert. Number 46263199 PCGS # 39503
