- 1917 Buffalo Nickel. FS-801 (FS-016.4). Doubled Die Reverse. MS-64 (PCGS). By far the more dramatic of the two-known DDR varieties of the 1917 Buffalo Nickel, FS-801 is so rare in Mint State as to be virtually unobtainable under normal circumstances. We say "normal" because the present offering is certainly abnormal and not soon to be repeated. For this remarkable condition rarity is one of only two Mint State examples of the variety known to the major certification services. It is a beautiful near-Gem with satiny luster and soft champagne-pink iridescence. Sharply struck, as well, and a probable MS-65 were it not for a few faint and extremely trivial flyspecks on the obverse. Tied for Condition Census #1, and sure to be of keen interest to the advanced Buffalo Nickel specialist.
