Lot Description
1856 Octagonal 50 Cents. BG-307. Rarity-5+. Liberty Head. MS-63 (PCGS). Satiny surfaces with pale honey-gold color and good detail for this challenging variety. BG-307 is one of many California small denomination gold issues that has remained scarce despite its early recognition by numismatists. An example (though not identified as such, of course) appears on page 7 of Peterson's Complete Coin Book(Philadelphia, T.B. Peterson & Brothers, 1859), where it was described as "current money" and, interestingly, valued at just 40 cents. Provenance: From the Oregon Collection. PCGS Population: 8; 9 finer (MS-66 finest). PCGS# 10427. NGC ID: 2BJE. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
