Since the Mint did not begin recording the number of Proof minor coins struck each year until 1878, the mintage of this issue can only be estimated based on the number of pieces extant and allowing for the usual rate of attrition. We suspect that at least 850 Proofs were struck, perhaps as many as 1,100 specimens. Among the survivors, few retain the full, vivid mint color that characterizes both sides of this pinkish-rose beauty. Universally brilliant in finish and sharply struck throughout, this is a premium Choice specimen for the Proof type or date collector.
