- Lot Description
- The doubled arrow head on the obverse and spike from the fifth leaf to the eagle's right leg on the reverse readily identify this die pairing. A pleasing Ryder 1-D, the present example exhibits dominant, slightly streaky, olive-brown patina with intermingled rose that is more pronounced on the obverse. Some peripheral softness is noted, but the strike is well-enough centered, and the central motifs are bold to sharp for the assigned grade. A thin scrape close in to the arrow shaft, below the feather, is easily overlooked in most viewing situations, and the shallow flan flaw at the left base of the mound upon which the Native American stands is as made and out of the way. Original planchet texture around the peripheries also does not overly detract from this handsome EF Massachusetts cent.
