Lot Description
Offered is a stunning condition rarity from an otherwise readily obtainable late date With Motto Liberty Head eagle issue. Remarkably smooth and attractive surfaces exhibit soft golden-apricot color. Both sides are fully struck with bountiful mint luster.
A generous mintage of 812,130 circulation strikes partially explains the plentiful status of the 1898 eagle in Mint State. The primary reason, however, is the widespread use of this issue in the export trade during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In recent decades, thousands of these coins have been repatriated, swelling the Mint State population in numismatic hands to 7,500 or more coins (per Dave Bowers, A Guide Book of Gold Eagle Coins, 2017). Most of these are in lower grades, however, the result of years spent jostling around in cloth bags. With even certified MS-65s rare, this premium MS-66 with CAC approval is a phenomenal condition rarity worthy of inclusion in the finest gold type or date set.
