- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Warm peripheral toning in russet, steel-olive and powder blue frames otherwise silver gray surfaces. Plenty of bold strike detail remains, and there are only a few light marks from circulation scattered about.
Silver deposits for quarters remained low in 1820, continuing the trend of 1819, with only 127,444 pieces delivered during the former calendar year. This mintage was achieved using three obverse and four reverse dies in five pairings. The Browning-1, offered here, is the second scarcest of the 1820-dated issue, the obverse shared with the 1820 B-2 variety, and the reverse with the 1821 B-2. This is a nice mid grade offering that will appeal to many early quarter variety enthusiasts. Initial die state, both the obverse and reverse perfect, without the die chip within the digit 2 in the denomination that developed later.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: For almost 20 years this has been my set piece, with few opportunities for an upgrade to a problem free coin in a higher circulated grade. This is a truly scarce and challenging R-4 variety.
