Lot Description
1830 Matron Head Cent. N-2. Rarity-2. Large Letters. AU-58 (PCGS). A particularly impressive example of this variety that is likely worth far in excess of what the assigned grade might imply. Smooth and satiny surfaces are wonderfully original with a few blushes of olive-gray to otherwise dominant medium brown patina. The strike is nicely centered and, although both sides exhibit areas of softness, the overall impression is suitably bold. The striking quality of this coin is similar to that seen on the Blaisdell-Naftzger-March Wells-Twin Leaf example, also certified AU-58 by PCGS and most recently sold as lot 10108 in our March 2016 sale of the final-listed collection. That specimen realized an impressive $2,115, suggesting that an equally strong premium is in order for the present example. Noyes Die State B/B. Provenance: From the Lux Family Collection, begun as early as the 1850s. PCGS# 36940. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
