1878 Trade Dollar. Proof-65 (NGC). An exceptional Gem Proof. Deeply toned antique-gold and slate mirrors support frosty motifs rich with deep blue iridescence. A hint of mint brilliance escapes from beneath the toning at the center of the reverse. A Proof-only date that saw no attendant circulation strikes of the issue, though Carson City and San Francisco struck trade dollars in 1878-by the following year, 1879, trade dollar coinage was limited to Proofs out of Philadelphia and continued that way through the demise of the series in 1885. One of 35 examples of the issue called Proof-65 by NGC, with 21 pieces graded finer by that firm, a Proof-68 is the solitary finest. NGC Census: 35; 21 finer within the designation (Proof-68 finest).
