- THE SAN DIEGO COLLECTION A VERY attractively toned and high end Premium GEM that is listed at the top of the Condition Census for the variety. Rotating the pearlescent lustrous surfaces in the light bring the soft blue and emerald peripheral hues that melt into a light lilac and antique, clear gold in the centers. The devices are crisply and boldly rendered by a precision blow from the screw press. The surfaces are exceptionally clean and free of distracting marks, lines, discoloration, or anything else that distracts from the superb visual effect. This GEM has a sensational eye appeal! Ex Allstate Coin Co, June 1997, by private sale; Hamilton Collection; Heritage's sale of the Hamilton Collection, 2016 ANA Auction, lot 4620 (as PCGS MS64 CAC); Heritage, 2017 FUN Auction, lot 5655 (as PCGS MS66); our consignor. PCGS 9, NGC 8. The most recent examples sold in the $12,925-$13,800 range, but this coin brought a very strong $21,150 in the 2017 FUN auction. The PCGS Price Guide value of $17,500 seems to split the difference. PCGS has graded just four in MS66+ finer, none of which have ever sold in auction. It should be noted that the Perfection Collection had a 65+ and the Chicago Collection had only a 65. This coin will see strong bidding when it crosses the block. Good luck. Cert.
