Lovely golden-honey surfaces are further enhanced by wisps of delicate champagne-pink iridescence. Softly frosted luster abounds on minimally worn surfaces, the design elements also sharply defined in the absence of all but the lightest high point rub. Undeniably original and uncommonly well composed at the assigned grade level, this is a superior Choice AU in an Indian eagle that will impress discerning gold enthusiasts.<p>The 1915-S signifies a radical shift in the commercial history of the San Francisco Mint Indian eagle series. Where the issues from 1909 through 1914 circulated extensively in the American West, the 1915-S saw limited distribution. Rather, most of the 59,000 pieces produced were retained in government vaults until destroyed through melting in the late 1930s. Only around 1,000 circulated coins survived, almost exclusively AU, along with just 400 to 600 Mint State examples. Ranking among the 10 scarcest Indian eagles in today's market, the 1915-S represents a significant find and important bidding opportunity at all grade levels.
