Lot Description
FROM THE MHS COLLECTION All 366,000 Capped Bust quarters were struck from a single pair of dies in 1838, the final year of this type, before switching to Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design. The present coin is among the 10 FINEST graded by PCGS, and is a Condition Census B-1. Brilliantly lustrous silver centers are framed by a halo of mostly blue with accents of gold and crimson, likely imparted from long term storage in an old album. Sharply struck near the centers with some minor peripheral weakness. The eye appeal is exceptional. PCGS 19, NGC 21, CAC 11. There are two graded MS64+ at PCGS, neither of which have sold in auction. We sold a PCGS MS64 CAC in December 2021 for $8,225, and the Newman coin (which serves as the Rea, et al Plate Coin) had a similar look and is one of the NGC MS64+s, which last sold for $14,688 in our June 2015 Regency Auction. We think the PCGS Price Guide value of $10,000 is too low. NO PCGS-graded GEM has sold since 2015. Bound for a fantastic set! Good luck. Cert. Number 24056609 PCGS # 5357
