1839 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-3. Rarity-5+. Large Letters. EF-40 (NGC). Dominant steel-gray patina with intermingled sandy-gold tinting around the reverse periphery. Our first offering for this elusive die pairing in recent years, Dick Graham's (2012) opening comment for the 1839 GR-3 half dollar is worthy of serious consideration: "A very scarce variety that you should pick up whenever you see one and look to upgrade it is you come across a better one later." In attractive NGC EF-40, we suspect that most Reeded Edge half dollar variety enthusiasts would be pleased with this coin as their primary 1839 GR-3. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection.
