Lot Description
1839 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. MS-63 (PCGS). Slightly muted silver-gray surfaces on either side. Mostly well struck, with a bit of softness on the reverse legends. Surface blemishes are minimal. It is a pleasing MS-63 certified example.
The reeded edge Capped Bust half dollar is only a four-year type, initiated after installation of new steam operated coinage presses in 1836, with two distinctive reverse lettering types used. For the first two years, the denomination at the lower reverse rim was noted as 50 CENTS, while in 1838-39 the denomination was identified as HALF DOL. Collectors specializing in nineteenth century type coins usually opt for both in their sets.
