Lot Description
Amazing 1934-D Washington Quarter Condition Rarity The Only PCGS MS-67 of the FS-501 Attribution 1934-D Washington Quarter. FS-501. Heavy Motto, Small D. MS-67 (PCGS). This enchanting Superb Gem really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. Both sides are dressed in a bold array of multicolored iridescent toning that includes shades of pale apricot, pinkish-rose, golden-olive, champagne-pink and pearl-gray. Silky smooth surfaces are further enhanced by soft satiny luster. Sharply struck, as well, and a delight to behold. Quarter production at the Denver Mint in 1934 amounted to 3,527,200 coins, a smaller total by Washington quarter standards that confirms the key date status of this issue in all but the lowest circulated grades. As a solidly graded and aesthetically pleasing Superb Gem the Washington Rainbows specimen is exceedingly rare from a condition standpoint. Sure to sell for a strong premium to an advanced Washington quarter Set Registry collector. The FS-501 attribution of this issue refers to what Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton (Cherrypickers' Guide, 2012) believe is just a single leftover die from the 1932-D issue, attributable by a small D mintmark that is also known as the Type of 1932. The authors describe it as, "a rare variety by any standard." Provenance: From the Washington Rainbows Collection, the #1 PCGS Registry Set of Silver Washington Quarters, 1932-1964. PCGS Population (all varieties of the issue): just 4; 0 finer. This is the only MS-67 attributed as FS-501 on the PCGS holder. PCGS# 407910. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
