Lot Description
The so-called overdate 1869/8 three cent silver is quite the rarity regardless of designation. PCGS CoinFacts estimates 20 are known in all grades, and that service has graded a total of 40 (including no doubt much duplication); NGC does not certify the overdate variety. While described as a 9/8 by Walter Breen, more modern scholarship has shown that the 69 is just repunched. The fields are a fully reflective, flashy mirror finish with a bold depth and clarity. The devices are thickly frosted and well struck, providing the highly desirable CAMEO contrast. Both sides have a lilac-teal overtone that is quite lovely. Only 600 Proofs were struck. PCGS 2, NGC 0, CAC 3. There are just three finer in all grades. The most recent sold for just shy of $10,000 nearly six years ago. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $15,000 and we have no doubt bidding will be intense when this GEM crosses the block. Cert. Number 40806246 PCGS # 83720.00
