Lot Description
1870-CC Liberty Half Eagle. VF-25 (NGC). A classic rarity from the first year of Carson City Mint coinage and easily one of the most important Liberty half eagles from any mint. The deep honey-gold surfaces exhibit deeper orange-gold toning throughout and are remarkably free of circulation marks, especially given its lengthy stay in circulation. Perhaps just 40 to 50 or slightly more 1870-CC half eagles are currently known in any grade, and the appearance of this particular coin is an event. The 7,675 pieces minted saw heavy commercial duty in the Carson City area with today'' survivor typically equal to the present piece give or take a few grading points. Half eagles of the date are even rarer in high grade. Whether you specialize in rare half eagles or Carson City Mint products, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
