Lot Description

1870 Round $1. BG-1205. Rarity-4+. MS-61 PL (NGC). As usually found on this issue, the fields are brilliant and reflective but the surrounding borders are softly impressed. Struck by an unknown maker circa 1870, these seem to have appeared in early Chapman auctions. Later known as the "Goofy Head" for the somewhat ungainly look on Liberty, also as the Lantern Jawed variety for the awkward appearance of Liberty's head and bust.
