Lot Description
Impressive PCGS-certified Mint State quality for this scarcer Crosby number. The surfaces are a bit glossy in texture, and there is curiously bright rose-red color nestled among the central design elements, but no troublesome marks are seen, and both sides have retoned quite nicely in gray-brown. The strike is off center to 6 o'clock on the obverse, lower border into the word NOVA, 4 o'clock on the reverse with the peripheral detail soft in that area. Otherwise we note sharp detail that is particularly noteworthy at the all-seeing eye in the center of the obverse. High grade examples of this elusive variety show up rarely. Ford had a couple; his duplicate is the best one we've had in the era of commonplace certified grading, sold as a PCGS MS-62 BN in our November 2020 sale for $6,600. Ford's primary specimen, which brought $8,625 back in 2006, was offered again in the March 2021 Partrick sale, graded just AU-58 (NGC) and selling for $4,320. This one is not quite as nice, but still ranks among the finest certified and is worthy of serious bidder consideration.
