Lot Description
None Finer at PCGS or CAC 1940-D Washington Quarter. MS-67+ (PCGS). CAC. A virtually pristine example struck on the dawn of World War II for the United States. The overall brilliant and pearly surfaces show hints of crimson and olive-green iridescence at the borders. This patina is emphasized by intense satiny luster and essentially untouched surfaces. At the very pinnacle of preservation for the issue, it ranks at the top of the PCGS and CAC population reports. One of the lower mintage circulation strike Washington quarters, the 1940-D was produced to the extent of only 2,797,600 coins. Even circulated survivors command a premium, while in Superb Gem Mint State this issue is scarce. At MS-67+, this piece offers a level of quality only seen in the finest collections. It is tied with the most famous examples of the issue including the Pogue Specimen and the Washington Rainbows piece. PCGS Population: 19; 0 finer. CAC Population: 43; 0. PCGS# 5812. NGC ID: 244V.
