Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage indeterminate/5, Rea et al. Die State d, the reverse shattered by numerous cracks with a thin cud along the border outside the letters TATE in STATES. With glints of underlying antique silver shining through gently mottled, soft pewter gray patina. The upper left obverse and lower left reverse borders are soft due to uneven strike and wear, but other areas retain bold outline definition to the major design elements. Smooth in hand with no sizeable or otherwise individually distracting marks.<p>The 1806 Browning-2 represents the first of two uses of this obverse die, and the only use of this reverse die. It is one of the most readily obtainable die marriages of this issue but, according to our consignor, the present example is CC#2 for the very rare die state.
