Tompkins Die Stage 3/5, Rea et al. Die State b. Impressive condition rarity for this conditionally challenged and underrated early quarter dollar series. The obverse is dressed in gently mottled orange-copper and steel-blue iridescence, while the otherwise antique silver reverse shows some light blue-gray tinting at the denticles. Central strike detail is crisp for both sides, although the peripheries have the often-seen softness. Full and frosty, the luster flows serenely over uncommonly smooth and well preserved surfaces.<p>The final year 1838 is a plentiful issue for its type in terms of total number of coins known, but we caution bidders that the vast majority of survivors are well worn from years of commercial use. Mint State examples of even marginal quality are scarcer than most collectors appreciate, while in full Gem Uncirculated this issue is an unheralded condition rarity. A find for the astute bidder.
