Lot Description
The 1872 mintage of 65,000 represented the final emission of this odd denomination for circulation (a small number of Proofs would be struck for collectors in 1873 and then the denomination ceased to be produced). With such a low mintage, the 1872 is a key date in all grades, and becomes incredibly RARE in GEM Mint State. The present example is very impressive visually, defined by its reflective, Prooflike fields and sharply impressed devices. Rich, brick red coloration dominates the surfaces with soft gold, light brown, and iridescent lilac accents. The definition is crisp, with razor sharp design elements. A high end example in every sense. Ex Heritage, June 2011, lot 3161; Jim O'Neal Collection, Heritage, April 2013, lot 4141; Heritage, February 2017, lot 3647. PCGS 22, NGC 9, CAC 17. While the most recent example sold in November 2017 for $8,400, this coin brought $11,750 in its last appearance. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $8,750 and the CAC CPG value is $9,000. Extremely difficult to find in higher grade, PCGS has graded only a dozen in GEM RD or finer. Bound for a world class set of this odd denomination. Cert. Number 6651977 PCGS # 3613
