Lot Description
1891 Liberty Quarter Eagle. Proof-65+ Deep Cameo (PCGS). CAC. The startling depths of glassy reflectivity in the fields and bright mint frost on the luminous yellow-gold devices provide stark field-to-device contrast and exquisite visual appeal to the viewer of this conditionally rare specimen. Just 80 pieces were struck in Proof format, and PCGS estimates that a mere 40 coins are currently known to survive. This beautiful, fully struck, and impeccably preserved Gem is among the four finest-known examples with the Deep Cameo contrast noted by PCGS, and actually seems conservatively graded to this cataloger. The meager issue of business strikes for the year all exhibit a doubled die reverse feature, and apparently this Proof reverse die was not used for other 1891 quarter eagle coinage.
