Lot Description
Jody Harrison Collection. Browning-5 (R.3), "large letters". 1 graded MS-64+ PL, zero in all other grades combined. NGC shows several on their population report, but that service is more apt to implement the "PL" designation -- not due to being more liberal or conservative in grade, but rather as a simple reflection of their belief in the designation. The 1s in the date both have an extra serif, and the cataloger has long wondered whether "3" in the date wasn't originally punched in upside-down, as it shows a curious extra line within the opening as well. But what makes this astounding coin so special, besides ethereal brilliance, is the prooflike designation bestowed by PCGS. A surprising number of 1835 quarters have actually received the designation from both services, but the cataloger could not find another B-5 so-described. That said, this is not a very rare proof as can be inferred by the inexact striking details at most of the stars. Blazing silvery presence looks every bit the part of a gem coin, but closer examination reveals three to four delicate hairline abrasions in the obverse right field.
