Lot Description
1798/7 Capped Bust Right Eagle. Taraszka-9, HBCC-3180, BD-1. Rarity-4+. Stars 9x4. EF-45 (PCGS). Lustrous deep yellow gold with warm orange high points on the obverse, the reverse mainly bright yellow gold with some olive highlights and prooflike reflectivity. Evenly worn but only lightly marked, with no particular blemish worthy of reporting here. We note some faint, small planchet adjustment marks in the clouds immediately below OF on the reverse, though they are far from distracting. From a reported mintage of just 900 pieces, and rare in all grades as a consequence. Overdate details plainly evident, as is an obverse die crack that runs from the rim at 12:00 through the L in LIBERTY and downward into Liberty's tresses to a point just behind her ear. Early eagles have come into their own of late, with strong prices achieved in the series time and time again. We imagine the present coin will bring strong bidding activity as well, so be prepared to compete when this specimen crosses the auction block.
