- Obv: A head of Liberty faces left with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above, the date 1880 below, and 13 stars arranged around the border seven left and six right. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Rev: The inscription 895.8 S. / 4.2 - G. / 100 - C. / 25 GRAMS is centered within a beaded circle, outside of which is a wreath of corn and cotton. The Latin motto DEO EST GLORIA is inscribed within an ornamental cartouche at the top of the wreath. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border and the denomination ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower border. This beautiful Gem Proof exhibits halos of steel-russet peripheral toning around warmly patinated centers. The latter areas exhibit dominant silver-mauve color that yields to soft champagne-gold and powder blue iridescence as the coin dips into a light. Fully struck with a delightful reflective finish also imparted by the dies.
Examples of this type, of which only about 20 are known in silver, combine an obverse die whose design was taken from the pattern $50 half union of 1877 with the reverse of the 1879 pattern goloid metric dollar (Judd-1617, etc.). The Mint distributed Judd-1645 as part of goloid pattern sets, and survivors are seen far less frequently than those of their 1879-dated predecessor.
