Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 3/5, Rea et al. Die State d. Memorable Choice Uncirculated quality for this challenging early quarter dollar design type. Deep sea-blue and purple-gray toning adorns both sides. The satiny surfaces also exhibit resilient underlying luster that merges nicely into the antique toning. From center to periphery, the coin is generally well struck with only isolated softness to the eagle's head on the reverse, at and above the drapery clasp on the obverse. The stars are all sharp, and the eye appeal is strong.<p>Despite the quarter's continued unpopularity with silver bullion depositors, at whose request precious metal coinage was achieved at the United States Mint at the time, 1818 did see unusually high demand, and the mintage of 361,174 pieces is the highest for this denomination from 1796 through 1828. The Large Diameter Capped Bust type as a whole is rare in the finest Mint State grades, however, and the 1818 is no exception. Opportunities to acquire an example as technically sound and aesthetically pleasing as this premium Choice MS-64 usually come along only once in a long while.
