Lot Description
Lot 451 1803 C-4 R4. PCGS graded AU-50.Triple Struck Obverse. Glossy chocolate brown with lots of frosty light brown toning in protected areas and an area of darker olive brown toning in the field before the chin. There are some light contact marks at the top of the wreath plus a few more scattered over both sides, none notable but more than you expect at this level of sharpness. The obverse was struck three times with a small offset between impressions of no more than a half millimeter. Nonetheless evidence of the three strikes is clearly visible on the date and all devices. The reverse, however, shows no trace of more than a single strike, and the fields on that side are slightly prooflike. The reverse is rotated 10 degrees CW. Our grade is EF40 sharpness net VF35for the tiny contact marks. The attribution and Widok Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 55, 1 in 55+, 1 in 58.(PCGS # 35137) Value $1,000 - UP Ex Ellis Robison, Stack's 2/10/1982:321-Carvin Goodridge Collection-Goodridge Estate, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldbergs 9/2/2012:118-The Widok Collection (includes the Goodridge collection envelope and both lot tickets).
