Lot Description
72.1 grains. A nice example at the assigned grade level, the obverse is dressed in rich mauve-gray patina, the reverse a bit lighter with glints of mauve to dominant pewter gray. The planchet is slightly out of round with evidence of a few shallow clips, lower left obverse soft with the border into the letters in that area. The reverse shows better centering and universally bold detail, while the obverse is bold for the tree and the peripheral lettering from 8 o'clock clockwise around to 5 o'clock. Close inspection with a loupe reveals only a few trivial marks, the in hand appearance pleasingly smooth. The popular Spiny Tree variety is generally regarded as the last of the Oak Tree shillings produced. The obverse die is the same as that used to strike Noe-13, although for Noe-14 it has been extensively reworked to include a thicker trunk to the tree and thorns, or spines, on the branches. This is a wholesome EF example that is sure to please.
