Lot Description

1844-C Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. EF-40 (PCGS). Pale silver and light rose highlights adorn otherwise olive-gold surfaces. The detail is suitably bold for a circulated Charlotte Mint coin, and the surfaces are overall smooth in hand. A fire at this coinage facility late in 1844 precluded the production of an 1845-C quarter eagle issue, resulting in a higher rate of attrition through circulation for the 1844-C. Indeed, survivors from a mintage of 11,622 pieces are scarce in an absolute sense and seldom grade finer than VF. PCGS# 7735. NGC ID: 25GU.
